The medical staff and outreach department at Sheehan Health Network would like to remind women to take time to evaluate their own state of health. The hospital has introduced a new community education and outreach campaign entitled "Time to Focus on You" to encourage women to get annual checkups and mammogram screenings.
The Ads feature a photo of women community leaders of color that have committed to leading by example and being advocates regarding the importance of health care prevention.
"We are excited about this campaign, it has become a community affair; for instance, the distinctive photo was taken by photographer Katie Schneider of Katie Schneider Photography and each lady donated their time for the photo shoot," stated Annise Taylor, Director of Development, Outreach and Planned Giving at Sheehan.
The focus on women health and wellness needs continues throughout the year at Sheehan. The network of primary and specialty medical services includes Family Care, Diagnostic Services (Mammograms, Ultrasounds and CT Scans), a Dental Clinic and the City View Treatment Center, which provides inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation.
Why Prevention is Important?
According to the National Health Women's Report, the highest rate of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are among women of color. Women seldom anticipate illness in their busy lives and often do not take preventative measures.
What Can Be Done?
- Get Annual Check-Ups
Early detection is important.
- Know Your Family History
Women should research their family history to check for health risk factors.
- Perform routine breast self-examinations at home, and schedule a clinical breast exam by the age of 20 and mammograms at age 40.
- Eat Healthy and Exercise
Our diet is just as important as the clothes we put on our bodies. Women should not only watch what they eat, but at least 20 minutes of exercise each.
- Do not Smoke
-Part of taking care of ourselves is making sure that we have "good" mental and emotional health. Take time to release the stress.
Ladies, you cannot be healthy unless you take better care of yourself. It is ok to put yourself first. Start today by taking the necessary steps to prevent diseases and control health issues before they become a crisis.
